A child can care about someone else and still need rest, space or a turn with a toy. During reading, notice moments when characters want different things. Ask what each character might need before looking for a solution. This keeps kindness connected to listening rather than automatic agreement.
Use a low-pressure pretend situation, not a replay of a painful conflict. A toy might say “I am still using this” or “I would like some space”. Take turns being the listener as well as the speaker. The listener can stop, acknowledge the request and ask about a different plan.
Children also see how adults respond to a boundary. Thanking a child for speaking clearly and offering an acceptable alternative makes the conversation concrete. When safety requires a limit, explain that limit simply. Stories can open a conversation, but the everyday response from adults is part of what the child experiences too.
