A small noticing moment before reading

Mindfulness

KCM-AKIRA

Keep it ordinary

You do not need a special room or a silent child to notice something together. Before opening a book, look for one colour nearby or listen for one sound. Let the child lead if they wish. A few seconds can be a complete activity; there is no target to achieve.

Make room for different responses

Keep eyes open and breathing comfortable and ordinary. If noticing sounds is not enjoyable, try looking at a picture instead. A child may laugh, move, talk or choose not to join. The point of the invitation is shared attention, not making a child perform calmness.

Carry curiosity into the book

Once you open the book, look for a detail that connects with what you noticed: a colour in the sky, leaves near a character or a tiny background object. Ask whether the child wants to keep looking or hear the next part. This makes observation one possible way to enjoy a story, alongside words, movement and imagination.
